Downside Primary School

 Religious Education

Intent

At Downside Primary School, Religious Education is delivered through the agreed Luton syllabus. This is particularly important at Downside as we are a multi-cultural community and the religious makeup of this community is very varied.

Our RE curriculum is designed to develop individual pupils’ knowledge and understanding of the religions and beliefs which form part of contemporary, multicultural society. Through our curriculum, pupils explore a broad range of religions which promotes respect, morality and open-mindedness towards others with different beliefs and faiths within the local community, including those who do not believe in a god.

They also learn the value and significance of the ‘Golden Rule’, a concept followed by atheists and people of different faiths, which ultimately prepares Downside children to be exemplary citizens in the wider world.

Downside offer a full inclusive Religious Education. If you have any questions about the curriculum or are thinking of withdrawing your children from RE lessons please contact the Family Workers in the first instance.

Year 5 Cambridge Mosque visit April/May 2026

Year 5 have started their unit of work on Islam. As a part of this unit, they were lucky enough to visit the Cambridge central mosque and learn about their commitment to sustainability through its architectural design, featuring advanced technology that gives it a near-zero carbon footprint, and honouring natural forms and materials with its forest-like vaulting.
