Music at Downside
Intent
Downside Primary School has an ambitious music curriculum that empowers children, increases their creativity and self-expression and helps them become multi-skilled musicians. The education that the children receive is of a very high quality as they are taught by a specialist music teacher and visiting peripatetic teachers from Luton’s Music Service. We believe that a high-quality music education should be available to all children. Therefore, at Downside, every child is taught how to play a range of different instruments as part of their music lessons such as the xylophone, recorder, ukulele, djembe drum, guitar and piano.
During their weekly music lessons, children also learn about the history of music and about a variety of famous musicians and composers, different musical genres and styles, musical instruments from around the world and discover the different ways that music has been used to reflect society, express emotion and unite people from different cultures all around the world together.
