Intent

At our school we offer an ambitious, high-quality Art curriculum designed to inspire our children to become future artists and equip them with the knowledge and skills to do this. Our staff value Art as a vital part of the entitlement of our children’s broad and balanced curriculum. We hope to inspire and educate our children by studying influential, exemplary artists from different cultures and eras. We hope that Art will help to develop our children’s perception of themselves and appreciation of the world around them. Our children will enjoy opportunities to experiment, develop their skills and fulfil their artistic potential.

Reception Oceans Day 2025

The reception children had lots of fun learning about keeping our ocean's safe. They learnt a poem about the sea, made bookmarks for the book fair competition linked to the oceans and outside the children had to try and clean up the 'sea' by getting the rubbish out of the water. TThis week the children have also been learning about snails and they explored the sand and made spirals of sea snails.

Year 3 enjoyed a Q & A session with Peter Brown, author of the Wild Robot. The children also followed a step by step drawing tutorial to create the Wild Robot!

After weeks of building our skills up with chalk pastels, we completed our final piece today. We all drew the composition of the fruit bowl and then used chalk pastels to create a 3D effect using shading, smudging, hatching and cross-hatching.

Year 5 children are half way through their sculpture unit. They created an armature of a sea creature using plastic and cardboard, used modroc to cover and secure and finally used sheets of modroc to add texture. We can't wait to see the finished sculptures.

This week we have been learning how to paint mix to make brown. We have used the primary colours , red , yellow and blue and used this to paint a bear.
 

Year 2 - Art - Vincent Van Gogh 4th Oct 2024

This week in Year 2 we started painting the background for our final piece inspired by Vincent Van Gogh's 'Starry Night'. We used wavy lines, broken lines and swirls as well as colour mixing to make different shades of blue.

This afternoon it was time to let the art do the talking at the annual Downside Art Gallery. The quality and range of work was exceptional and once again just shows how talented Downside children are.
